One of our students brought a friend who proudly announced, “I’m a 1st Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo.”
Naturally, I asked, “How old are you?”
“I’m 9,” he said. Then added, “I actually earned my 1st Dan at 8. My studio gives 3rd Dan at age 12.”
I was speechless—not because the student was trying to be disrespectful, but because of how differently our school treats the Black Belt journey.
Black Belts Should Be Earned, Not Handed Out
At our school, a Black Belt isn’t just a piece of fabric—it’s a symbol of maturity, commitment, and character.
We don’t award 1st Dan Black Belts to 8-year-olds. In fact, we require students to be at least 13 years old to test for 1st Dan. Younger students who reach a high level of skill may earn a Junior Black Belt, but the full title of 1st Dan is reserved for those who are emotionally and mentally ready to carry the responsibility.
Why?
Because we teach more than martial arts. We teach:
- Respect and discipline on and off the mat
- Black Belt Excellence, which tracks life skills and behavior at home and school
- Public speaking and leadership, so students can present in front of peers
- Goal setting and perseverance, skills that last a lifetime
A Lesson in Character
During class, this visiting student showed off, interrupted drills, and tried to outshine others. Meanwhile, our student—the one who invited him—focused, worked hard, and encouraged his peers. That’s what true martial arts is about.
By the end of class, the difference between the two was clear. One had the belt. The other had the mindset of a true Black Belt.
